About the Area

Situated in northwest Montana, the Flathead Valley is the western gateway to Glacier National Park - the "Crown Jewel of the Continent."

The Park boasts glacial lakes, waterfalls, meadows, 1000 species of plants and wildlife and more than 700 miles of hiking trails. The Flathead Valley is also home to the Big Mountain ski resort in luxurious Whitefish as well as Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi.

Sprinkled with national parks, picturesque lakes, soaring trees and white top mountains, the Flathead Valley offers an assortment of year-round outdoor activities for every age and personality. Kayak down the Flathead River, hike any of the Valley's hundreds of trails, skydive into Lost Prairie, snowshoe through the many national parks, admire art in Kalispell, play a round of golf on championship courses or go ice fishing on any of the numerous frozen lakes - the Flathead Valley is the ideal destination to enjoy each of the four seasons to their fullest.

Although located just 50 miles from the Canadian border, the Flathead Valley experiences relatively moderate temperatures considering its elevation (approximately 3,000 feet) and latitude (near the 49th parallel). Winter days averaging around 28 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal for skiing, snowboarding, sledding and other outdoor winter activities, while 80 degree summers are happily spent boating, fishing, horseback riding, golfing and antiquing.

Still largely undiscovered, the Flathead Valley's four season climate, scenic environment, genuine hospitality and endless list of recreational and cultural activities make the region an ideal get away destination for those looking to escape the crowds and chaos of everyday life. Now with five major airlines offering direct service to Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) from six U.S. cities, it's easier than ever to visit the Flathead Valley any time of year.
